My intention with this site is to provide some useful information, some humor, some history and some humanity from a nurse’s point of view. I’ve been a nurse for a very long time (47+ years) and have experienced many amazing things during my career. Many have said, and I agree, that nursing is one of the (if not THE) hardest majors offered. It is not for the faint of heart. Most people approach their nursing education filled with altruism, care, compassion, kindness, a desire to help others and a love of humankind. These first inclinations are honed to include, efficiency, grit, determination, a strong back and legs and little need for rest. Nursing has changed tremendously in the decades that I have practiced, making advances in technology, science and culture, but still I long for “the good old days” when our patients were our first and only priority.
I know! I can feel your eyes rolling back in your head… but, indulge me some nostalgia.
Nursing is not now, nor has it ever been a perfect science. We are still learning and growing, still fighting for recognition as a profession. Nursing is the most trusted profession: “For an impressive 22nd year, nursing was rated as the most trusted profession once again in 2023, according to a Gallup poll. Despite its #1 ranking, only 78% of U.S. adults now believe nurses have “very high” or “high” honesty and ethical standards. This is 11 percentage points lower than the highest rating for nurses during 2020 and the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. ” https://nurse.org/articles/nursing-ranked-most-honest-profession/
